Palestine: A Land of Conflict and Division
Borders and Geography
The State of Palestine, located in Western Asia, covers an area of 6020 sq km. It shares borders with Israel to the north west and south, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest.
Historical Background
The Palestinian population is divided between historic Palestine and a diaspora mainly in neighboring Arab countries. In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Partition Plan for Palestine, which would have divided the region into Jewish and Arab states. The plan was accepted by Palestine's Jewish leadership but rejected by Arab leaders.
